Springton Hills Wines was named after the township where it is located, in the beautiful Eden Valley amongst vine-covered hills. Here you’ll find a unique, boutique vineyard that’s entirely family-owned and was literally built from the ground up.
Owner and Chief Winemaker, John Ciccocioppo, emigrated from Italy in 1963 with his family of five brothers and sisters, and brought with him a legacy of Italian wine-making traditions. John was originally involved in the motor industry, and it wasn’t until 1998 that he decided to study wine-making. While Papa’s wine tasted good for a while, the wine was stored in barrels and the exposure to air meant that his efforts turned to vinegar. With decades of business experience from owning his own motor company, John decided he was ready to branch out on his own and put his knowledge and experience into action.
In 2001 John and his wife Connie purchased bare land and planted the vines on the land themselves. They built much of the machinery involved in the creation of their bespoke wines, including the basket press and refrigeration units, and all the tanks were installed by the family. After a lot of love and labour, Springton Hills Wines’ first vintage finally came to be in 2005.
All of the fruit that goes into the bottles is hand picked and processed within half an hour of picking. John and Connie’s daughter designed all of Springton Hills Wines’ stationery and all of the labels on the bottles. This truly is a family affair.
Springton Hills uses a traditional growing method, avoiding weed sprays and over irrigation, and produces chardonnay, riesling, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, grenache and montepulciano. All of the red wines are fermented in open fermenters that are temperature controlled.
The soil structures here differ from elsewhere in the Barossa. It has a relatively shallow top soil with a layer of shale and granite below. The higher altitude also means the ripening period is a little longer than others areas within the Barossa Valley. Harvesting the white varieties usually starts at the end of February and it can extend as late as late April for the red varieties, with montepulciano the last variety to ripen.
Thanks to the nature of the terrior and altitudes of the region, the Eden Valley is known for producing some of the best rieslings in Australia, and so it comes as no surprise the flagship drop is Eliza’s Riesling. This bottle is best paired with spicy Asian dishes, grilled fresh seafood and classic Italian pastas and risottos.
Having won prizes from the Sydney International Wine Shows among others, as well as being named as one of 10 top new wineries in the James Halliday 2011 Wine Companion, Springton Hills is quickly growing its reputation.
